The paintings and drawings I make explore a personal obsession for the clues and suspicions that suggest a story. The ongoing narrative addresses the sensationalism of relationships as represented through the venues of popular culture and traditional iconography.
The contextual references are drawn from south of the border inspired by sources where myth and superstition are visibly intertwined with contemporary life. The novelas of Mexico, a comic book soap opera in which lust and tragedy consume daily experience: folkloric dichos (proverbs); and ex-voto milagro imagery are departure points which bait and feed the narrative layers within my work.
Fragmented in composition, the non hierarchical stories thrive on passions in response to unrequited physical and spiritual desires. The multi panel sequences and the split image drawings play on emotional dualities and bicultural conflicts in very slippery moments in time.
In short, the work makes visual narratives which can be read byway of one's personal history as traditional aspirations are sorted out and recounted. My own life experience is of course inseparable. .
